Starting June 21, 2008, calls made within the 418 area will have to include the area code prefix. This will make it possible to introduce a new area code – 581 – in September of 2008 to meet the growing demand for communications services.

Go green: Reduce your carbon footprint and cut expenses with new tools from Bell

More and more Canadian businesses are making the link between business travel and global warming, according to Claude Rousseau, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Sales at Bell. "When they are able to actually calculate the greenhouse gas savings resulting from virtual conferencing solutions, the choice becomes obvious."

It all adds up

A business can reduce emissions by about 150 kilograms using a two-hour Web conference instead of a plane flight between Toronto and Montréal for one person. That's equal to the emissions produced by lighting and heating an average Canadian household for eight days.

Those reductions add up. Bell's customers and employees held 2.53 million teleconferences in 2006, avoiding an estimated 1.7 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. That's equivalent to the annual emissions of 344,000 mid-size cars!

Recycle your mobile phone and help the environment

Electronic waste (e-waste) is the fastest growing form of waste in the country. Now you can help reduce the amount of e-waste going to landfill.

Through the Mobile Take-Back program, you can return used mobile phones from all manufacturers to any Bell store. You can also ship your phone to us by Canada Post, free of charge. To find out how, click here (you may change the province selection at the top of the screen).

For each unit collected, Bell will donate $1 to World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Canada to help finance projects focused on fighting climate change.

Recovered phones will be reused or recycled, then refurbished or disassembled by a specialized company that has been selected by Bell to recycle the components.

Our Mobile Take-Back program also recycles all mobile phone accessories, batteries, and even personal digital assistants (PDA). All data on the returned devices will be deleted.

You can also return your phone to a participating Caisses Desjardins

Desjardins Group has partnered with Bell Canada to set up recovery bins in more than 480 locations in Québec and Ontario for its members, clients, elected officers, employees and the general public.

"The success of this initiative relies on the commitment of all consumers to dispose of their mobiles phones in a responsible way," said Pauline D'Amboise who, as General Secretary for Desjardins Group, is in charge of applying the company's sustainable development policy.

"Our partnership with Desjardins increases the scope of our actions and strengthens our existing take-back program," said Marc Duchesne, Director, Corporate Responsibility and Environment, Bell.
